"The past few years have been really tough for me. As I have undergone cancer treatment and then dealt with the consequences, the intellectual challenge of creative writing has given me a focus and allowed me to escape into that part of my brain which figures things out, problem solves, imagines, learns and grows. That is so important because sometimes the rest of life feels really scary, or just in stasis. Every time I think I'm through it and able to look around me again, they seem to pull me back in! Basically writing and creativity are freedom - a chance for other things to matter more than what's going on with me at the moment. The Accelerate programme has meant I can connect with other writers, be inspired by them, learn from them and the Box of Tricks team, and be part of a creative community in the city. It also legitimises creating something. It has given me the words and the confidence to say I'm a writer and I'm writing something now, with these people. There's accountability, but an awareness that we are all juggling a million things, so, accountability with caveats is necessary!"

"In my play, House on the Hill, I explore the themes of loss, grief, love and family dynamics. Hannah's feedback on the previous draft really helped flesh out the plot and characters better (thanks Hannah). My goal for this draft has been to make sure that everything hangs together, the backstories are revealed at pace and appropriately and that the characters have a strong voice each. I think I am getting closer! Had it not been for this programme, I would have put my writing on the back seat and cracked on with life... But because I was part of this programme, I got feedback on my ideas and writing to keep me going... It keeps me being a writer."

"Accelerate gives you what you need before you know you need it: access to work/rehearsal space, expertise, advice, and a network of incredible fellow travellers who generously share their time and knowledge. Having completed this in-person course in Manchester in 2024, I better understand how to get from A to B, and who to ask for help when my confidence is low and I don't know which way to turn. It's like having a compass, a map, and a trusted guide to help you navigate unknown territory and de-monster the monsters. Plus, you couldn't wish to meet two lovelier people. Thank you Adam and Hannah."

"I applied for the program because I wanted the experience of working with BOTTC who develop many artists and work I admire - in particular local artists. They have provided a comfortable and creative space where we discuss our ideas about work, plays, and navigating creative industries. We got to meet people who share their experience and advice with us which has been brilliant alongside the support and advice from Hannah and Adam . We’ve formed a mini community of people who just want to finish our play and challenge ourselves. BOTTC enabled that. Thank You!"
