Assistant Producer Attachment: Meet Junfeng Liu 28/01/2025

Over the next few months, Junfeng Liu (an Arts Management student from the University of Manchester) is joining us as an Assistant Producer. Some of you may have met him at our PlayMakers Takeover at the weekend. Introducing Junfeng…

My name is Junfeng Liu, a Chinese performer and arts manager. I’m currently studying MA in Arts Management at the University of Manchester. I am thrilled to join Box of Tricks Theatre as an Assistant Producer. This opportunity marks an exciting chapter in my journey within the world of performing arts, and I couldn’t be more delighted to be part of such an inspiring team.

Before I started my career in drama and theatre, my major focus was on popular music performing.I’ve earned BA in Music Performance (Pop Singing) at Xinghai Conservatory of Music (China), then I came to UK and graduated with distinction in MMus Music Performance at Kingston University London. My career as a performer has taken me to prestigious stages across China and the UK, including achieving 7th place in The Voice of China (Guangzhou Region) in 2019, performing at the Guangzhou Opera House’s Les Misérables Concert, and participating in the British Consulate General Guangzhou’s “More Than Music” event in 2024. In the UK, I have showcased my voice at London’s Rose Theatre during the KSA LIVE! concert and Dorich House Museum in 2023. These experiences deepened my understanding of the artistry and connection that make performances impactful. However, my work both on stage and backstage sparked a growing fascination with the creative and logistical processes behind productions—everything from stage management and production planning to audience engagement. This realization inspired me to pursue Arts Management at Manchester, where I am currently exploring strategies to support, sustain, and innovate within the arts sector. Transitioning into arts management has allowed me to blend my passion for performance with the organizational and leadership skills needed to create meaningful artistic experiences, positioning me to play a broader and more impactful role in the world of theatre and the performing arts.

A significant highlight of my career has been contributing to productions that connect global audiences with the arts. I had the privilege of working as a captioner, creating Chinese subtitles for international tours of renowned productions, including Broadway’s School of Rock and the West End’s And Then There Were None. My work extended to subtitling South African play The Life and Times of Michael K and contemporary adaptations Romeo and Juliet by Matthew Bourne. These experiences allowed me to help make celebrated productions accessible to Chinese-speaking audiences, fostering cultural exchange and highlighting the universal language of theatre. Additionally, I served as the Assistant Stage Manager for the Chinese opera Marco Polo, where I gained valuable insights into managing complex stage operations for a production deeply rooted in cultural history.

Joining Box of Tricks Theatre is an incredible opportunity to bring my global experience and passion for storytelling to a company that values innovative and original voices. As an Assistant Producer, I’m excited to contribute to the creation of thought-provoking productions and collaborate with a talented team of creatives. Theatre holds a special place in my heart because of its ability to transcend boundaries and foster connection. Whether performing on stage, working backstage, managing Chinese subtitles for international productions, or supporting creative teams, I’ve always sought to ensure that every story is told with authenticity and impact. This placement with Box of Tricks represents a unique opportunity for growth and discovery. I’m excited to immerse myself in the company’s creative vision, contribute to the behind-the-scenes magic, and help bring meaningful stories to life. Thank you for welcoming me to the Box of Tricks family! I look forward to collaborating with this inspiring team and engaging with audiences and communities alike. If you’re passionate about theatre or interested in connecting, I’d love to hear from you—let’s keep the conversation going!
