Meet our Associate Playwrights 16/09/2022

Box of Tricks is delighted to announce three new Associate Playwrights joining our creative family: Ella Carmen Greenhill, David Judge and Becky Prestwich. During their attachment, each Associate Playwright will explore an aspect of their own practice, develop ideas for a new play and deliver masterclasses and events for our PlayMakers Network. Find out more about their plans...

Ella Carmen Greenhill

"Through my Associateship, I would like to explore the character of The Mother in the stories we tell… on stage, on screen, to ourselves, to our kids at bedtime. What preconceptions do I use in my own storytelling? What judgements? What lies? What praise? And how do those stories affect my own ability to be a Mother?"

Ella is a playwright and television writer. After being selected for ITV’s Original Voices BAME scheme, she joined the writing team on CORONATION STREET, and has since written more than 60 episodes. She has written for CBBC’s The Dumping Ground, Malory Towers, Disney’s PJ Masks and is currently adapting Kate McDougall's memoir, LONDON'S NO.1 DOG WALKING AGENCY, for Watford and Essex. She is also  developing projects with Gaumont, Welle Entertainment and Balloon Entertainment. Her play Plastic Figurines, published by Methuen, toured with Box of Tricks in spring 2015 and went on to have a run at the New Diorama, London in autumn 2016. As well as across the UK, Ella’s work has been performed in Mexico, New York, Madrid and Romania.

David Judge

"Working with Box of Tricks has always encouraged me to be honest, vulnerable and adventurous with my writing and inevitably always leads to exciting, fresh and provoking work. I can't wait to meld with other artists, forage for inspiration and deliver an engaging new piece of work under their nurturing guidance and support."

David is a playwright, performance poet and actor. His most recent play SPARKPLUG, which David wrote and performed, toured the UK in Spring 2019 and was shown on Sky Arts in May 2021. David has written a new play, CHATBACK, for the National Theatre Connections programme, and he is working with Sky Studios on an in-house tv drama series developed by and for new writers with producer Vicky Wharton.  David has written his first episode of CORONATION STREET which was broadcast in June 2021. His first play SKIPPING ROPE was shortlisted for the Alfred Fagan Award and PANLID was commissioned by Talawa and the Royal Exchange.

Becky Prestwich

"When I talk about the kind of plays I write, I often talk about them as plays for people who might not think of 'The Theatre' as for them, but who love a primetime drama. And so, I'm keen to use my Associateship to explore the possibilities of digital theatre... How is digital theatre different to TV or film - and if it isn't actually all that different, does it matter? What makes theatre, theatre anyway? How does digital theatre break down existing barriers to access and how do we avoid putting up different barriers in their place? "

Becky has written multiple episodes for Doctors and Holby City and is currently writing on Casualty. She has written five Afternoon Dramas for BBC Radio 4 – including Just The Three Of Us – nominated for a Tinniswood Award for best audio drama. She has written for BBC3 and has an original crime drama in development with Lime Pictures. As a playwright, she specialises in work with community casts and in non-traditional theatre spaces, including Chip Shop Chips (Box of Tricks Theatre), Under the Market Roof (Junction 8 Theatre) and One Night in Bolton (Octagon Theatre).
